Client Stories – Meet Josie Paton & Kelsi Taylor

Hi, our names are Josie & Kelsi and we are beauty therapist on the Sunshine Coast.

Our lifestyle was working 12hour days use to mean not eating proper meals, very little water and being too tired to exercise. Fast forward to Amy coming into our salon, Brazilian Beauty Currimundi, and her inspiring us to change these bad habits. We started PT sessions with Amy the following week back in October 2016 and it was the best decision we have made. Not only does she push us to our limit physically but she also guides and coaches us in having a healthy mind and healthy body by fueling it with the right foods.

We have not only lost weight and toned up but we are happier and get so much more out of every day. Having the extra energy has pushed us to achieve great things and this reflected at our annual awards ball recently when our salon won awards over 20 other salons.

We both love the MAB community and are continuously inspired by other members stories and the amazing trainers Amy, Mel and Kim.

Client Stories – Meet Nicky Webb

Hi my name is Nicky Webb. My husband and I moved to the Sunshine Coast about 14 months ago from Bundaberg. Background We have been married now for 8 years. We moved for work reasons away from both our families and all of our friends. Life in Bundaberg seemed very normal to us (at the time). We worked during the week and socialised with friends and family on the weekends. There wasn’t much more to do other than getting together with our mates on the weekends and having drinks and parties. (Or so it seemed). Bad Habits were made over the years and our physical outdoor activities became limited. Our lifestyle was leading into more alcohol and “easy food options” socialising and less health conscious activities.

The Move When we made the move I decided that I wanted to feel better about myself and become fit again. I also knew that I wanted to meet people and start getting out and about. My husband works away half the time so I knew I needed to keep myself busy and I figured I might as well get fit at the same time.

I was introduced to Mel and the MAB team by a mutual friend and I have not looked back. I have been combining personalised PT sessions and with MAB bootcamp schedule through Mel & Amy’s guidance and this structured training has been implemented into my weekly lifestyle routine. I’ve been training with MAB now for over 12 months.

In that time I’ve become stronger, leaner, healthier and so much more confident in my own skin. I have more energy than never before and this has come from a structured eating plan which MAB has also taught me to implement. Before that my eating was too complicated causing weight gain and my meal size portions were far too big.

My biggest self achievements so far have been the MAB 6 mountains adventure day and also the 10 km fun run this year. I have participated in the 6 mountains twice now. The second time really showed me how much my physical fitness had improved from the first time I did it. By the end of the day I was so proud of my improvement and this brought me pure happiness and a feeling of true accomplishment. My husband always comments on how much happier I am now and how much more confident I am. I feel as though Mel & Amy gives me the tools I need to succeed in my personal goals. There have been so many opportunities for me from the MAB team that I cannot wait to see what my future with MAB holds. I have met an amazing bunch of people and every training session is made fun. No training session has ever been the same and so I’m never bored as there are no repetition feelings that you may experience in a typical gym environment. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mel & Amy and the MAB team for my achievements so far. It’s been a blast !!

MAB is getting more adventurous on the Sunshine Coast

I am thrilled to announce that ‘MAB Personal Training and Adventures’ are sharing even more adventures with locals and visitors to our beautiful Sunshine Coast.

With adventures being my signature and biggest passion and the Sunshine Coast being one of the most popular destinations to visit in Australia, it makes perfect sense to expand this part of the business even more.

Oh and did I mention that one of my biggest adventures to date was spending the day with the beautiful Sofie Formica and the TV show, ‘The Great South East’.

Yep just a few weeks ago ‘MAB Personal Training and Adventures’ got to spend the day with Sofie and the film crew, I am sure that you can imagine just how super excited I was about being able to share my passion and love of adventure with the world.  I took the team on the ‘MAB Glass House Mountains Discovery Adventure’ which is to the foothills of the Matthew Flinders, the adventure is a combination of:

History, ‘Matthew Flinders was the first European to set foot on the Sunshine Coast, when his crew disembarked from the Norfolk on 19 July 1799’

Nature,  ‘Discovering the waters of Pumicestone Passage to the mountains and hikes of the Glass House Mountains’

Kayaking, ‘Down the still beautiful Bells Creek Pumicestone Passage, The majority of the locality is part of the Beerburrum State Forest’

Mountain climbing, ‘The unique Mount Ngungun 253m high, 2.8km return. Open forest with a fern understorey, woodlands, a small rock overhang, caves, spectacular 360 degree views from the top of Mount Ngungun, close-up views of nearby Mount Tibrogargan, Mount Coonowrin and Mount Beerwah’

Hiking, ‘We  walk around the base of the beautiful 364m high Mount Tibrogargan, the circuit being 3.2km in total. Mount Tibrogargan is located between Beerburrum and Glass House’

Fitness, ‘What better way to burn calories and work up a sweat then being outdoors in nature

Food, ‘Enjoy healthy yummy delicious snacks and lunch by The Paleo Place

Fun, ‘MAB makes it fun, it’s all about the experience’

HOW awesome is that?

Sofie totally loved the adventure, especially the mountain climb, she said, “mountains are her happy place”, which of course I personally relate to. There is something about climbing a mountain, it’s a like a metaphor to life ‘When you reach the top, you feel on top of the world, as if you can do anything, you feel alive and empowered’.  I was honoured that Sofie even got involved in doing one of the famous #mabstarjump, we did a group star jump on the top of Mount Ngungun.

The MABSTARJUMP is all about ‘Living Big’, our moto is:

“Live Big

Love Big

Dream Big

And do lots of STAR JUMPS

Because life is totally worth celebrating”

Having years of experience sharing my adventures with MAB clients I feel confident that I have the tools to help people of any fitness level to enjoy this adventure.  I believe adventures can sometimes bring up fears for people, however I find with the ‘Power of Intention’, the adventurer can make an MAB Adventure something even more magical by saying goodbye to their fears and saying hello instead to their awesomeness.

Nerves……. What nerves, If you know me, then you know that I love to talk and that I get very excited about the outdoors, however as soon as camera was pointed on me, I went all shy? What the? Me shy? Never, right?  I can’t wait to see the see the piece ‘The Great South East’ has put together, what I know for sure is, ‘It’s going to be perfect’.

I find it amazing that by living the life I love to live, I get to share with others, to inspire them to live a happy, healthy, active, adventurous life full of love. My heart is beaming with gratitude to the point that it could explode and I am smiling from ear to ear.

I am super grateful for ‘Visit Sunshine Coast’ and ‘The Great South East’ for helping MAB get our adventures out there to locals and visitors alike, and I am also super excited and grateful to all current clientele for continually supporting MAB and joining in on the new adventures that we are continually coming up.

Let’s get adventurous…If I have inspired you to the point of adventure, contact me and let’s DO IT TOGETHER, I’m offering a GREAT SOUTH EAST SPECIAL CELEBRATION ADVENTURE – Book an adventure with me in the month before the end of September to receive a buy one adventure, get one free (yes that means you can bring your friend for free).  Contact me on 0401 286 200

FIVE (not-so-secret) weapons to a healthier, fitter body

Everywhere we look there seems to be some kind of promise, a secret weapon if you please, to get an amazing body in no time at all and with little effort as possible… Weight loss organisations promise the loss of 10kg for JUST $10!! They claim you just need to follow their ‘easy’ weight loss program including calorie counting and the consumption of up to 25 ingredients (including chemicals) in simple foods. Other diets claim to have you looking like a supermodel in just two weeks! Don’t forget the ab machines… these will transform you from overweight to having 8-pack abs in just a month! All the while working out in front of the TV with a huge smile on your face, gliding from side to side with the greatest of ease, your mascara staying perfectly in tack with not a drop of sweat to be seen! Exercise isn’t for you? Perhaps a weight loss tea will appeal to you more? Just drink five times daily and vola!

Shakes, wraps, teas, diets, machines… promise after promise of quick and easy weight loss or super abs. Gimmicks! At the end of the day, this is all these things are. Sure you may lose some weight with some, maybe all of these weight-loss approaches but for how long? And how healthy are they for your body?

When I began my study in fitness, deep down I was kind of hoping they would give us the ‘secret weapon’ for a better body… A special set/rep you could perform or a magic diet you could follow. Unfortunately this didn’t happen. What I did learn however, were five REAL not-so-secret weapons that you can use to create a healthier you. I’d like to share them with you.

  1. Determination.

Yes, you need this! This is what keeps you powering up Moffat Hill, holding a weight above your head, when all you want to do is throw it at your trainer and tell her where to go. This is what keeps you doing the minute of push-up rows when burpees are the penalty for stopping.

How determined are you to get to your goal whatever it may be? Ask yourself, do I have the determination? What is getting in my way of achieving my goal? Am I just half determined? Do I give 100% at training or could I give a bit more?

  1. Dedication.

You’ve probably heard time and time again that summer bodies are made in winter. I hate to be blunt but, unless you have been gifted with the genes of a supermodel (and I can guarantee you that they too must work hard to maintain their figure) and can down a burger without gaining a single inch of fat, then you need to work on your ‘summer’ body all year round. Don’t wake up one sunny summer day, having not got up on those cold winter mornings to train, and expect to be beach ready. Sorry but it just won’t happen! Don’t expect to run a marathon without prior dedication to training. Don’t expect to win a INBA competition without the dedication to training, all year round. Anyone in professional sport will tell you that training does not stop in the off season. It requires dedication all year round, every month of the year. Dedicate yourself to your training (and your trainer) and you will achieve your desired goals.

  2. Diet.

No, I’m not talking about the banana diet or the starvation diet or the shake diet or even the diet where you consume only 1000 calories per day. I’m talking about your everyday diet, that is, the real food you eat from day-to-day, 365 days per year, every year, for the rest of your life. The food you put in your mouth is what fuels your body. Ask yourself what fuel your body deserves. Eat clean people!! That is the secret to a great diet, nothing else but clean, raw, as close to nature as we can. Stay away from food that contains copious amounts of ingredients and ingredients that you can’t pronounce. Stay away from foods that have high sugar and sodium content. Stay away from preservatives and avoid being trick by manufacturers that label foods ‘natural’. Fresh is the way to go. Organic is even better. Ask your local grocer where your fruit and veges come from. Ask your butcher where he gets his meat. Don’t be afraid to ask questions even if they seem silly at the time. I once had a 45 minute discussion with my egg lady about the pros and cons of feeding chickens protein. I now know what she feeds them, when the eggs are laid, and I can even go and pick them out from the farm if I want. It’s your body and you have every right to know exactly what you are fuelling it with.

  3. Stop sabotaging yourself!!

This is a very important point. When I started training with Mel (about 6-7 years ago) I was training 3-4 times a week. On the floor I was putting everything in, lifting the weight, using great technique, etc. I would physically vomit after some sessions from the amount of effort I was putting in. I was achieving results but not what I should have been achieving… Was this Mel’s fault? Every inch of me wanted to blame her, tell her that she wasn’t giving me the ‘secret weapon’ I was looking for, the short cut that I thought she knew. At the time I remember thinking that she obviously wasn’t doing her job right, she was keeping something from me, not training me right. In reality, I was in denial.

There was no denying I was training hard but… I was also consuming half a carton of full-strength beers a day – yes, that’s right, 12 beers a day! I’d go days without eating and smoke copious amounts of cigarettes. I was really destroying my every chance of obtaining maximum results, not Mel. I was sabotaging myself!! I was not giving myself the respect and health my body deserved. I can guarantee you that if you are not receiving your desired results then you are sabotaging yourself in one way or another. This could include but is not limited to poor diet, alcohol, cigarettes, stress, bad relationships, little water consumption, over-training, under-training, making excuses, not giving 100% in your training session, negative headspace… anything that is working against you in achieving your desired results.

  1. Listen to your trainer.

If your trainer says to rest up, do it. If your trainer says to stop smoking, just do it. If your trainer says to stop eating shit, for the love of God, do it! As a trainer I want to see my clients achieve ultimate results. So does Kim and Mel. We tell you things for a reason, not because we like to hear the sound of our own voices. Every session you do has been tailor made to your specific goals. There’s a reason behind every set, every rep, a method to what sometimes seems like madness. We want to see you succeed, we want you to achieve your goals.

So there you have it. Five ‘not-so-secret’ weapons to a healthier you. If you are not achieving your goals, ask yourself these five things:

  • Have I got the determination to achieve my goals?
  • Am I dedicated? Do I put in the hard yards?
  • Am I fuelling my body with healthy premium foods?
  • Am I sabotaging myself? If it’s yes, then how?
  • Am I listening to and hearing what my trainer is telling me?

Remember… there is no single secret weapon, no magic pill, no special diet, no fairy dust, no easy way. It’s just one foot in front of the other. One step at a time. Remember that you are all awesome and you deserve awesomeness in your life.

Client Stories: Meet Shelagh Brennand

Hi.

In June 2008 I moved to Australia with my husband David and son Patrick for a better life and settled in nicely, giving our son the life he deserved. This was the life we dreamed of. Sunshine, outdoor life and more family time and family fun. I always thought I was a reasonably fit, healthy person and everything was going smoothly until April 2013 when I suffered a mild stroke. Our life was turned upside down. I could no longer work due to fatigue and my brain worked much slower than it used to. I was a Police Officer for 25 years in the UK and a Private Investigator here in Australia, so this lack of brain function and daily fatigue hit me really hard. I suffered post stroke depression and spent several months in and out of bed. Life was not good.

I first met Melinda from MABPT two years prior to my stroke when I participated in the Pretty In Pink Bra Breast Cancer Walkathon which she organised, and saw her enthusiasm and dedication with everything she did. So, in January 2014, nine months post stroke, I had gained a few kilos, slept most afternoons and felt my life was going nowhere and I knew I needed to change. I met with Melinda and she believed in me and gave me the confidence to rebuild my life. I start training and took part in one of her eight week mind and body challenges. By May 2014, I had lost 9 kilos, lost 27cms and lost heaps of body fat. Most of all, my mind was in a much better place and within weeks of training, my afternoon naps became infrequent. I participated in the MAB bootcamps, climbed mountains, began running and through the MAB network of like minded clients, I felt motivated and alive for the first time in ages. But could this last?

It is now January 2015. I have maintained my weight loss through regular training and with one MAB PT session a week and two MAB bootcamps, plus personal fitness, I am living and once again loving life. My regular naps have become a thing of the past and I manage my fatigue well. I have met some amazing people who continue to inspire me and give me the motivation to continue in my fitness quest. My goals are simple….to continue to love and live the life I have.

The two photos I have chosen are worlds apart. The one taken in April 2013 was ten days post stroke. I was ill, I had lost my sparkle and although trying to smile, I hurt so much inside, as I felt I had lost my life. I have never posted this photo before but wanted to show what MAB have done for me. The one taken in December 2014 was in celebration of those who participated in another MAB challenge. I think it speaks for itself. I have chosen one with Melinda as I feel she has shared my journey. My sparkle has returned!

Client Stories – Meet Leanne Coleman

My story: Leanne Coleman

In 2012 I celebrated my 50th Birthday! As usual I love a costume so 1950’s Hollywood was the theme! At 103kg I was a super sized Marilyn Monroe !
I was three years clear of breast cancer at that stage and had had a bit of a challenge with depression and had turned to comfort food eating!
In November of that year after months of gym membership but no motivation I was fortunate to meet a PT who took the time to work out what made me tick! Laurie encouraged me to participate in my first 6 week challenge and thus started me on a new path in my life! I will be forever grateful to her!
I had a new mind set and each time I stepped out of my comfort zone I reached a new milestone! I grew in confidence and making life decisions became a reality and not just a dream! From my teenage years I have gravitated to the Sunshine Coast , I made a lifestyle decision to move and that came to fruition in August 2013.
Along the way due to changes I had two more PT’s who kept me on the healthier fitness path!
The last two years my goal was get strong to participate in the 60klm walk to raise funds for Cancer research , I’m happy to say both years I comfortably completed the event!i was 75kg at the time of this years event!
There have been times I have slipped back into some old habits but once I listen to my body I get back on track!
Life will always have it’s challenges however I think here as a part of the MAB family we have such a wonderful support network that our goals can be realised!
I am still stretching for new goals in my health & fitness journey and that is the great thing about where we live and can enjoy so much at our doorstep !

Here’s to many more adventures with the MAB family!!

MAB Wrap up for the year 2014

WOW what a year! After reading the final blog of 2013 and watching the attached video, it hit me what a massive year 2014 has been. It’s been so much fun that I haven’t even had the time to blog about it! So much has happened and I have so many amazing moments to share with you.

I personally started the year off with a bang with a spontaneous trip to New Zealand for an adventurous birthday with close friends that continue to bring out the best in me. This inspired me and planted the seed for more adventure in 2014. It gave me clarity of what I wanted to achieve in 2014 and it gave me time to connect with myself to set my intention. My intention was to live an adventurous happy fun healthy life and do everything with so much love and passion. Now that, my friends, is exactly what happened! By sharing this blog i hope to inspire you to be clear of your intention because you will manifest exactly what you intend to. It’s amazing to realise that you can create the life you desire and that you can use the power of choice to choose how you want to live your life.

Macushla, Robyn and Toni experienced their first tough mudder. Mandy overcame her fears of ab sailing at Kangaroo Point. Tania achieved a 26min hover. Kim faced her fear of heights and climbed Mt Tibro. Kathi climbed her first mountain. Meg and Rob star jumped in Hawaii. Kathryn and Leannne completed the Pink Pearl 60km Walk for Cancer. And the list goes on… everyone achieved so much and had an awesome, fun, adventurous year.

Thank you to everyone that contributed to making 2014 an awesome year for MAB. You all rock and you all matter. A massive thank you goes to Kim Bowmaker for playing such a huge part in making the MAB team so awesome.

I would like to say thank you to all of my amazing clients for giving me the privilege of helping you this year. I love each and every one of you. A special mention goes to my long term clients who have been around for many years. I am truly touched and thankful for your loyalty, love, respect and friendship. I look forward to creating more awesomeness in 2014.

A huge thank you also goes to the many local businesses for their support and sponsorships in both the challenges and fundraising events. It is uplifting to see the community come together to create positive change and I am grateful to be part of such a giving community.

And finally… I would like to thank my family and friends for their ongoing love and support. You all put up with my crazy ideas and then support me with them even when they seem impossible, most importantly you were all there when I needed you most when I was challenged with my health in 2014. I love you all xox

My wish for you for 2015 is that you set aside some time for yourself, spend time in nature and do what makes you feel alive. Be clear of your intention.

I am grateful for every moment and connection in 2014. As I sit here in my hotel room in Vancouver, Canada – 16 hours behind all of you at home – I am getting excited for all that 2015 will bring. I know it will be whatever I choose it to be, it will be whatever I create… now that’s exciting!!

Let’s all set a MAB group intention to live an adventurous, happy, healthy, active, fun life with awesome people, and of course… do lots of starjumps as life is totally worth celebrating!!
